Fanny Phares - One of Buxton's First Residents

Found in the Elgin Settlement's first cemetery, this headstone marks the grave of Fanny Farres (should be spelt Phares) one of the original settlers at Buxton. Fanny had been one of the slaves Rev. King inherited when his father-in-law, John Phares, died. Rev. King freed his slaves and brought them to Canada and the Elgin Settlement in 1849.
