Junior Division Programs

 

Follow The Underground Railroad

This half day program presents the story of the Underground Railroad and the Buxton Community through exhibits, storytelling, literature and interactive activities.

During their visit to the museum students will:

-tour the museum with an artifact shopping list

-View the exhibit showing the journey of African Canadians from Africa to Buxton

--Tour of log cabin built in 1852 by a fugitive slave who came to the Buxton Settlement

-Tour the restored schoolhouse built in 1861 by the people of Buxton

-Experience an historic portrayal of one of the early settlers in Buxton

Activities in the junior program include: interviewing,vocabulary development, immigration and citizenship studies, role play and journal writing,a genealogy activity and many more.

The program comes with a teacher packet that contains a video, CD rom, teacher's guide, activity sheets, and novel Underground to Canada by Barbara Smucker.

Cost of program $6.00 per student + $60 for teacher packet.

Digging For Roots

This half day program includes:

-View the exhibit showing the journey of African Canadians from Africa to Buxton

-Tour of log cabin built in 1852 by a fugitive slave who came to the Buxton Settlement

-Tour of the entire 9000 acre Buxton National Historic Site with a step on guide on your school bus

-Cemetery Studies activity

Drama In The Buxton Schoolhouse

This full day program embraces stories of the Underground Railroad and adapts them to the Drama, Music and Arts curriculum at the junior level.

 

During their day at the Buxton Schoolhouse, students will encounter three different ant distinct time periods.

 

Activities in the program include, and interactive game on CD, writing, journaling, playwriting, role play and dramatic performances,creative movement, dances and rhythms, music experiences, and many more.

 

A required activity involves research of one of five fmilies from the early Buxton Settlement. All resources for this are included in the teacher package.

 

The program comes with a teacher packet that contains a video, CD rom, teacher's guide, activity sheets.

 

Cost of program $10.00 per student + $65 for teacher packet.

1861

Students will identify with and portray the first settlers of Buxton who traveled the Underground Railroad.They will hear stories of an actual escape, and capturing some of the details of that escape, create new escape scenes and adventures.

1910

Students will portray the grandchildren of the early settlers as they attended the Buxton School. They will experience the subjects tools and teaching methods of that time period.

2000's

Students will work out what life would be like for the ancestors of an original Buxton family that they have researched, and will create a dramatic or musical presentation that uses 1860's artifacts and interprets them in present day situation.
