Follow The Underground Railroad
This half day program presents the story of the Underground Railroad and the Buxton Community through exhibits, storytelling, literature and interactive activities.
During their visit to the museum students will:
-tour the museum with an artifact scavenger hunt
-View the exhibit showing the journey of African Canadians from Africa to Buxton
--Tour of log cabin built in 1852 by a fugitive slave who came to the Buxton Settlement
-Tour the restored schoolhouse built in 1861 by the people of Buxton
-Hear a storyteller tell a story of a child's "Barefoot Escape"
-Enjoy a musical and drama experience using a variety of African instruments

Activities in the primary program include: mapping, drama, retelling stories, researching , writing, problem solving, interviewing, timelines, family trees, puzzles, song writing, etc.
The program comes with a teacher packet that contains a video, CD rom, teacher's guide, activity sheets, and four children's books.
Cost of program $6.00 per student + $115 for teacher packet.

Day In A Rural Schoolhouse
This full day program includes:
-View the exhibit showing the journey of African Canadians from Africa to Buxton
-Tour of log cabin built in 1852 by a fugitive slave who came to the Buxton Settlement
-program in the 1861 schoolhouse delivered by the classroom teacher
Museum staff will visit the class in a dramatic portrayal.

Day In An Early African Canadian Settlement
This full day program looks at the lives of the early African Canadian Settlements in Chatham Kent with an emphasis on the Buxton Settlement
During their day at the Buxton Schoolhouse, students will role play one of the children who would have attended the school in 1861, and would have been a neighbour of the owner of the log cabin.
Students will also spend part of their day in the log cabin built in 1852, and will experience common household chores of that time period.
Cost of program $10.00 per student + $65 for teacher packet.

Before their visit to the settlement, students will complete a series of activities provided in the teacher packet, that will familiarize them with the settlement and the time period. All resources to complete these activities are provided, including a book "Henry's House" and interactive maps of the settlement.
