This is a primary/Junior level program package.

Included in this kit are:

  • Book - Henry's House- a story book written for the Buxton National Historic Site & Museum. This illustrated book tells the story of the Buxton or Elgin Settlement and of the life of the first owner of the 1850's log cabin on our site, as well as the story of his neighbours and their children. Through this book students will learn about the founder of the settlement, the people, and important landmarks and events in the early settlement.
  • Book - Baby Steps To Freedom - a story book written exclusively for the Buxton National Historic Site & Museum. This illustrated book tells the story of John Riley, who as an infant, accompanied his parents on their escape to freedom, and tells of his life in Buxton. The story is based on the true story of the Rilely family who escaped slavery in Missouri in the 1840's, before coming to the Buxton Settlement in 1948
  • CD Rom containing resources and information related to the early African Canadian Settlements in the Chatham area in the 1850's and 1860's. The CD also contains an audio version of the books mentioned above. The CD also contains interactive maps of the Buxton settlement that allows students to learn about the people and landmarks of the community by clicking on each location. The CD also includes a set of activities related to the listed resources, and addressing the language and the arts areas of the primary curriculum.
  • Activity Sheets for each of the segments - Early African Canadian Settlements in the Chatham area, Day in the Life of a Child in the Buxton Settlement in the 1850's and 60's, and Life in the Buxton Settlement.
  • Teacher's guide that relates each activity to the appropriate area of the primary curriculum in language and the arts.
