Lucy Brooks
Early Settler of Buxton

Lucy was born a slave in the state of North Carolina around 1820. Lucy married John Brooks, also a slave. Lucy and her husband had eight children together (Kincheon, Benjamin, Amanda, William, Augustus, Esther, John & James). In time, Lucy and her family removed the chains that bound them to slavery and sought refuge in Canada. Lucy and her family settled in the Buxton Settlement in the year 1858 after her husband purchased fifty acres at Lot 7, 13th Concession. Two of Lucy's sons Kincheon and Benjamin, fought in the Civil War. Lucy Brooks passed away on June 11, 1867 and was buried in the Methodist cemetery. Descendants of Lucy Brooks still reside in Buxton today.
