Alfred M. Lafferty

Alfred Lafferty was free born in Toronto, Ontario.  He was one of the first six graduates from the Mission School, SS #7, where he received his early education under Rev. William King’s tutorage.

In 1856, Alfred was accepted at Trinity College, University of Toronto, which he attended with former classmate Anderson Abbott.  In 1862 he received his B. A. with first class honors in Mathematics and Classics, and was awarded a silver medal in each department.

From 1866 to 1870 he taught high school at Richmond Hill. In 1872, he was Head Master of the Guelph High School. In 1875, he came to Chatham and was principal at the Wilberforce Educational Institute until 1882.

The family resided at 58 Thames Street. Alfred studied law and was called to the bar in 1886.  He practiced law in Chatham until health forced him to retire. He remained active with the Chatham Literary societies and was active in Prince Hall Lodge, until his death in 1912.
