cemetery in South Buxton on the
Middle Line Road, which was once
part of William King's Farm.

King's Former Slaves Were Among Buxton's First Settlers

Talbert - was purchased by King to assist at Mathews Academy in Louisianna; he came to Canada at age 27. Talbert changed his name to King and in 1857 he purchased land on the 10th Concession.

Eliza - came to King from the estate of Mary Phares mother; she came to Canada at age 31.

Amelia - came to King from the estate of Mary Phares mother; she came to Canada at age 7.

Fanny - came to King when he purchased land in Louisianna; she was an adult when she came to Canada and married in Buxton.

Peter - was Fanny's child and became King's property was he was eight years old.  She took the surname of King in Buxton.  From 1861-63, he owned property on the Ninth Concession.

Molly - came to King when he purchased land in Louisianna; she was an adult when she came to Canada and was employed as a housekeeper in Kings home in Buxton.

Sarah - was Molly's child and became King's property was she was eight years old.  She took the surname of King in Buxton. 

Jacob - was purchased by King to assist Talbert at Mathews Academy; he came to Canada at age 28. Jacob changed his name to King and purchased land on the 10th Concession  where he remained until 1864.

Ben - was inherited by King from his father-in-law John Phares estate.  Ben kept the name Phares and became a preacher.

Emeline - was inherited by King from his father-in-law John Phares estate.

Ise (Isaiah) - was inherited by King from his father-in-law John Phares estate.

Robin - was inherited by King from his father-in-law John Phares estate; he came to Canada at age 39. He settled on the Tenth Concession and married Fanny Fraser at age 56.  Robin remained on the Tenth until his death in 1898.  He was buried in the South Buxton cemetery.  (It is possible that his wife was the "Fanny" who was also Kings slave).

Stephen - was inherited by King from his father-in-law John Phares estate, he kept the name of Phares. He settled on the Eleventh Concession near King and remained there until 1861.  "Old Stephen" was the spokeman for King's slaves on the journey north.

Harriet - was inherited by King from his father-in-law John Phares estate.

Solomon - was Harriet's child and King purchased him before leaving with his slaves from Louisianna, so he could stay with his mother.  He was only five years old when he came to Canada.  Solomon took the surname of King.  He became a recruiting officer in Detroit during the Civil War and settled on a plantation in South Carolina, after the war.
